History and Founding of Radworks

In 2017, a collective of technology experts embarked on a mission to transform the landscape of free and open source software collaboration through the use of protocols instead of traditional platforms. This led to the establishment of Monadic, a software firm rooted in the vibrant district of Kreuzberg, Berlin. Monadic was the birthplace of Radicle and oscoin, two pioneering open-source initiatives designed to redefine the concept of open-source projects with their development, governance, and funding entirely facilitated online. Over the following years, these initiatives amalgamated into what is now recognized as the Radicle project.

By 2021, efforts to decentralize Radicle gained momentum with the launch of its native governance token, $RAD, leading to the creation of the RadicleDAO. This move empowered the $RAD token community with the authority to steer decisions regarding the project’s Treasury and smart contracts management. The original Monadic team transitioned into the Radicle Foundation, a Swiss organization established in 2020 to back the creation of robust and ethical software infrastructures, including Radicle.

The Foundation spearheaded and managed the primary development activities for Radicle until May 2023, when the project diverged into two separate entities: Radicle for code collaboration and Drips for funding distribution. Both entities emerged as independent organizations, or “Orgs,” supported directly by the DAO, which was rebranded as Radworks. Presently, the Radworks community continues to democratically manage its treasury, allocating resources to Orgs that align with Radworks’ mission.

How Does Radworks Work?

Radworks functions with a decentralized governance framework, energized by the $RAD governance token. This structure empowers the community to influence the network’s strategic decisions and the initiatives it endorses. Radworks consists of Orgs, which are various groups of contributors receiving funding from its treasury. For Orgs to secure backing, they need to get their annual budget plans approved via Radworks’ governance process. Each Org is granted the freedom to select its own governance structures, oversee its finances, and operate its entities. Presently, Radworks facilitates the growth of two key technologies: Radicle, a decentralized platform for collaborative coding, and Drips, a decentralized mechanism for fund distribution and division.

Radworks (RAD) Token

The RAD token serves as the cornerstone of the Radworks ecosystem, functioning on the Ethereum blockchain. As reported in 2023, there are precisely 99,998,580 RAD tokens in existence, with about 49,829,111 of these (roughly 49.83% of the entire supply) actively circulating. The allocation of RAD tokens is structured as follows: 50% is reserved for the Community Treasury, with these funds being released over a four-year period. Early supporters are allocated 20% of the tokens, which are subject to a one-year lock-up period. The team receives 19%, also with a one-year lock-up but including a four-year vesting schedule that starts from their date of joining. The Radicle Foundation is allotted 5%, with a one-year lock-up. Approximately 4% is dedicated to the Balancer Liquidity Bootstrapping Pool for enhancing liquidity. Lastly, 2% is designated for the Seeders Program (partners), which also comes with a one-year lock-up period.
