Netflix hints at new comedy about a forgotten crypto password worth $35 million

Netflix is diving into the world of crypto mishaps with a new comedy film centered on a painfully familiar digital-age problem: forgetting a password.
The streaming giant recently announced One Attempt Remaining, a comedy starring Jennifer Garner that follows a divorced couple who suddenly realize that the cryptocurrency they once won together is now worth a fortune. There’s just one catch—they can’t remember the password needed to access it.
According to details shared by Netflix, the plot revolves around the former couple racing against the clock after receiving a notice from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. They have just 48 hours to unlock a crypto wallet holding $35 million before the claim expires, turning a forgotten login into a high-stakes scramble.
The film’s premise echoes real-life crypto horror stories that have circulated for years. One of the most famous involves Stefan Thomas, a former Ripple executive who lost access to thousands of Bitcoin stored on an IronKey hard drive. The device permanently erases its contents after 10 failed password attempts. As of late last year, Thomas had reportedly used eight of those attempts, with no public update on whether he ever recovered the funds—once valued at hundreds of millions of dollars.
While cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology have occasionally appeared in movies and TV shows over the past decade, they rarely take center stage. A few notable exceptions include Money Plane (2020), the documentary Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King (2022), which examined the collapse of QuadrigaCX, and the upcoming film Going Infinite, chronicling the rise and fall of FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried.
Some of the most dramatic crypto stories, however, remain untouched by Hollywood. One such case involves Welsh entrepreneur James Howells, who claims he accidentally discarded a hard drive containing the private keys to 8,000 Bitcoin. Believing it ended up in a landfill in 2013, Howells spent years battling local authorities for permission to search the site. By early 2025, he had reportedly run out of legal options.
With One Attempt Remaining, Netflix appears ready to turn crypto’s real-world frustrations into comedy—reminding viewers that in the digital age, a forgotten password can be worth millions.
