Custodial vs. non-custodial wallets: what are they and what’s the difference?

If you’re just starting to explore cryptocurrency, you’ll quickly come across two terms: custodial and non-custodial wallets. Both describe ways of managing crypto, but there is one fundamental difference between them.

To understand that difference, it helps to first understand what a crypto wallet actually does.

Cryptocurrency is not stored inside a wallet app the way cash is stored in a physical wallet. Records of assets and transactions are stored on the blockchain, while a crypto wallet allows you to interact with them and sign transactions using private keys.

And it is who controls those private keys that determines whether a wallet is custodial or non-custodial.

What is a custodial wallet?

In a custodial model, the service manages the keys required to access and manage cryptocurrency.

Users interact with their crypto through an account: they log in, view their balance, and perform available operations through the platform’s interface. This model is commonly used by centralized crypto services and exchanges.

The service is responsible for managing the keys and determines how account access and recovery work. The user does not directly control the private keys.

What is a non-custodial wallet?

With a non-custodial wallet, control of the private keys remains with the user. The wallet provider does not hold the keys on the user’s behalf and cannot independently control their assets.

The user remains in control of authorizing transactions, while the wallet provides a convenient interface for managing crypto.

Many non-custodial wallets use a recovery phrase to restore access. In IronWallet, a recovery phrase is created with the wallet and can be used to restore it, for example, on another device. Because IronWallet does not store users’ recovery phrases or private keys, we cannot recover them on a user’s behalf.

That is why a recovery phrase should be stored securely and never shared with anyone.

What is the main difference?

The features available in different apps may vary, but that is not what the terms custodial and non-custodial describe.

The difference is about control.

With a custodial model, the service manages the keys, while the user accesses their crypto through an account.

With a non-custodial model, the keys remain under the user’s control, so they do not have to entrust their storage to a third-party service.

This does not mean you need to manually enter a private key every time you make a transaction. The app handles the necessary interaction with the keys in the background, while you use a familiar wallet interface.

What does a non-custodial model give you?

The main advantage is direct control over access to your crypto.

The wallet provider does not hold your keys or need to authorize transactions on your behalf. At the same time, a modern non-custodial wallet can still be easy to use: you can open an asset, receive crypto, enter an address to send it, or use other available features through a familiar app interface.

In other words, you do not have to choose between controlling your keys and having a convenient way to manage your crypto.

The non-custodial approach in IronWallet

IronWallet is built around this model: we want users to remain in control of their keys while keeping everyday crypto management simple and straightforward.

Private keys are generated and stored locally on the user’s device. They are not sent to IronWallet servers, and transactions are signed directly on the device before being submitted to the blockchain. The keys are also protected with encryption, and biometric authentication can be used to access the app on compatible devices.

You do not need to create an account or complete KYC to create a wallet and use its core features. If you have questions about using the app, you can contact support directly from IronWallet, with our support team available 24/7.

At the same time, support does not have access to your private keys or recovery phrase and cannot control your wallet on your behalf.

This is how IronWallet combines the core principle of a non-custodial wallet — your keys remain under your control — with a simple app for managing crypto every day.
